Thinking About Starting Therapy? Here’s What You Might Be Wondering
If you’re considering therapy, chances are you’ve already spent a lot of time thinking. Maybe you’ve Googled a few things. Maybe you’ve started and stopped filling out a contact form more than once. You might be wondering: Is therapy really for me? Will I have to talk about everything? What if it doesn’t work?
First, take a deep breath.
You’re not alone in asking these questions. At Mindful Healing Counseling, we talk with people every day who are thinking about therapy but feel unsure or overwhelmed about what it actually involves. This blog is here to help.
Below, you’ll find real, honest answers to the most common questions clients ask before starting therapy—so you can feel a little more confident taking the next step.
What is therapy, really?
At its core, therapy is a safe space for you to explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences without judgment. It’s not about someone “fixing” you—it’s about having someone trained to walk beside you as you untangle what’s going on inside.
Think of it like this: You’re carrying a heavy backpack. Therapy doesn’t make the backpack disappear, but it gives you someone to walk with you to help you unpack what’s inside, organize it, and maybe even lighten the load.
And yes, sometimes it’s deep work. But sometimes it’s also just learning how to breathe again, how to set boundaries, or how to stop overthinking at 2 a.m.
Do I have to be in crisis to start therapy?
Nope. Not at all.
You don’t have to be at a breaking point to deserve support. In fact, many of our clients come to therapy because they want to better understand themselves, make healthier choices, or finally stop feeling like they’re “too much” or “not enough.”
At our practice, we provide online therapy across Chicago and throughout Illinois to meet you where you are.
If you’ve been feeling anxious, overwhelmed, numb, easily irritated, constantly drained, or just not like yourself—that’s more than enough reason to reach out.
What happens in the first session?
The first session is about getting to know you—not grilling you or diving into deep trauma (unless you want to).
Your therapist will ask gentle questions to learn more about what’s bringing you in, your background, and what you’d like to get out of therapy. You’re welcome to share at your own pace. There’s no rush, no pressure.
It’s totally normal to feel nervous or unsure at first. We’re here to meet you with warmth and respect, not judgment.
What if I don’t know what to talk about?
That’s more common than you think.
You don’t need to come in with a list of things to say. In fact, part of the therapist’s role is to help guide the conversation. Sometimes just starting with, “I don’t even know where to start,” is the perfect place to begin.
There are no “wrong” topics in therapy. Whether it’s a recent fight, a childhood memory, or the way you shut down during conflict, it’s all welcome.
How do I know if it’s the right therapist?
This is such a great question—and such an important one.
Therapy works best when you feel safe, seen, and understood. That connection, or fit, matters more than any technique or strategy. In the first few sessions, ask yourself:
Do I feel comfortable being myself here?
Do I feel heard and respected?
Am I noticing any small shifts in how I think or feel after sessions?
If something feels off, it’s okay to say so. A good therapist won’t take it personally. In fact, we welcome those conversations because your comfort is essential to your healing.
How long do I have to be in therapy?
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer here.
Some people come for a few months to work through a specific issue. Others stay longer because therapy becomes part of their ongoing self-care. It’s always your choice.
We’ll check in with you along the way to see how things are going and what you need. You won’t be stuck in therapy forever—but you also don’t have to rush your healing.
Is therapy confidential?
Yes—what you say in therapy stays in therapy.
There are a few exceptions required by law (like if you’re in danger or someone else is), but otherwise, your privacy is protected. This is your space to be honest, messy, vulnerable, and real—without worrying it will be repeated.
What if I’ve had a bad experience in the past?
We’re so sorry if that happened to you.
Not every therapist-client relationship is a good fit, and unfortunately, some people have been hurt or dismissed in spaces that were supposed to be safe. That’s not your fault—and it doesn’t mean therapy can’t still help.
At Mindful Healing Counseling, we deeply value culturally affirming, trauma-informed care. If you’ve felt judged, misunderstood, or invisible in the past, we want to do things differently. You deserve care that actually cares.
Will therapy make me feel worse before I feel better?
It can sometimes bring up big feelings—but that’s not the same as being broken.
Healing can feel uncomfortable at first because you’re facing things you’ve been carrying for a long time. But it’s also where real change happens. We’ll go at a pace that feels right for you, and we’ll never push you farther than you’re ready to go.
You might cry. You might laugh. You might leave feeling a little lighter. It’s all part of the process.
Feeling seen by these questions? That’s not a coincidence.
We want you to know that therapy doesn’t have to be scary or confusing—and you don’t have to figure it all out alone.
Let’s make it easier to take the next step. We’ll help you find a therapist who gets what you’re carrying and offers support that fits your life.
What if I can’t afford it?
We know therapy is an investment—and we also want mental health care should be accessible.
That’s why we offer:
Sliding scale spots when available
Insurance billing for our providers with Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO, Aetna, and out-of-network benefits
Evening and virtual appointments to be flexible with your schedule and time
If cost is a concern, talk to us. We’ll do our best to find a path that works for you (or even offer referrals if we’re not the right fit).
Is online therapy really as good as in-person?
Yes, and for many people, it’s even better.
Online therapy is private, convenient, and just as effective. You can join sessions from your home, your car, or even a quiet room during your lunch break. We use secure, HIPAA-compliant platforms to keep things confidential.
Plus, virtual care can make it easier to find a therapist who truly understands your identity, background, and lived experience—especially if you live in a smaller town or have a busy schedule.
Many of our clients in Illinois and the greater Chicago area love the convenience and privacy of online therapy. Whether you’re located in downtown Chicago, the suburbs, or anywhere in Illinois, virtual therapy gives you access to compassionate care from wherever you are.
